University of Washington Restoration Ecology Network
(UW-REN)

INTRODUCTION

The University of Washington Restoration Ecology Network (UW-REN) program matches teams of UW students with regional ecological restoration projects. Over the course of an academic year, the students design and implement community based, collaborative ecological restoration on behalf of a community partner. More information about the program can be found here.

Friends of North Creek Forest have been delighted to partner with UW-REN since 2011 to restore areas of degraded habitat in North Creek Forest.

This is a "Capstone" project involving teams of 4-8 students who plan for and execute the restoration of a 1/4-to-1/3-acre parcel.  Removal of invasive, non-native plants followed by replacement with a variety of native species suited for the site is the big goal. Additional benefits are the teamwork, volunteer management and leadership skills honed by the real-world experience of collaborating with a non-profit partner.

FNCF supplies tools, volunteers and refreshments for this program. FNCF also provides ongoing maintenance at former sites including weeding, watering, mulching, and replanting. Utilizing staff, interns, and volunteers, FNCF works with UW-REN Teams to identify restoration priorities, creating  a comprehensive, forest-wide restoration plan and schedule, and also helps to implement proposed restoration.
