Thank You UW Student Volunteers!!!

Well it’s that time of year again! We say goodbye to our 2017-2018 UWREN team and the UW Bothell CBLR (Community Based Learning & Research) students who served us this spring quarter. We are so thankful to be a part of such a supportive community! Let’s look back on what each group accomplished.

2017-2018 UWREN Team on site #7

• Produced site assessment, work plan, stewardship and final report documents. These are available for you to peruse on our stewardship web page, under 2017-2018 UWREN team. https://www.friendsnorthcreekforest.org/uwren-site-7-2017-18.html
• Assisted in managing volunteers at 9 community work parties and 2 elementary school visits totalling over 1100 volunteer hours.
• Supervised volunteers and assited in removing over 1000 sq. meters of invasive species including Himalayan blackberry, English ivy and Herb Robert.
• Coordinated the installation of 386 native plants which reintroduced 36 native species to the forest.
• Installed monitoring posts and established baseline monitoring data for the restoration site.
• Attended FNCF events to help tell the story of the Forest and to speak about their project.

Restoration Volunteers

• Removed blackberry and other invasive plants to maintain lower UWREN sites
• Mulched UWREN site 7 around plants
• Watered newly installed plants
• Helped finish the trail for Citizen Science Photo-points.
• Went on several plant/ecology/natural history hikes to learn more about the forest

Citizen Science Volunteers

• Took photos, created social media posts, created flyers, and posted flyers.
• Created map and started forming trail in forest.
• Assisted in placing plant tags.
• Created a video “how-to”.

Restoration Crew Lead

• Attended Restoration Crew Lead Training to assist with work parties.
• Assisted with Education Events in the forest for elementary school children
• Completed data entry for volunteer events

As you can see our student volunteers worked really hard this quarter and accomplished so much! We are so proud of them and can’t wait to see what next year’s UWREN team does. Come check out their year’s worth of work at UWREN site #7, the restoration site closest to the North Creek Forest sign.
