This year, we have had the tremendous pleasure of regular visits from 5th and 7th graders from the Soundview School in Lynnwood. After many months of working in the cold and wet, it was lovely to have a warm sunny day for our final Soundview visit and we welcomed the opportunity to work in the shade. We spent much of our time removing invasive weeds from a nurse log just off the trail. Not only will this nurse log provide habitat for many animals that live in the Forest, it will serve as a valuable teaching tool for our developing outdoor classroom. When they weren't helping enhance the habitat itself, our students were learning about what the animals living in and around the Forest need for a healthy habitat. After a hearty lunch, each student received a certificate acknowledging their service and recognizing the hours they have contributed over the course of the year. The grand total was over 400 hours of forest stewardship! Thank you Soundview!
Get some sun and help Friends of North Creek Forest water our young plants this summer! This is an ideal opportunity to get a little low impact exercise and learn about restoration ecology and gardening while you spend time outside. The whole family can water together and watch the new growth take hold throughout the summer. We are looking for volunteers who can attend one of two upcoming trainings:
Then sign up for a minimum of 2 watering shifts / month through the summer. Watering will take place on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays or Sundays. Times are flexible. You choose the dates and times that work best for you! Training will cover watering techniques, plant identification, reporting volunteer hours, and more! Please sign up here, and/or contact our Volunteer Coordinator, Greg for more info or to sign up! This year's theme for GiveBIG was Day of Champions - and our community certainly demonstrated what champions you all are for North Creek Forest. Since this was our first time participating in GiveBIG, we set a fairly modest monetary goal of $2500, and a more aggressive recruitment goal of 25 new donors. We were thrilled to meet our recruitment goal and exceed our monetary goal! And we didn't just exceed our monetary goal,
The plants are looking a lot more green this week and some of them are even starting to bloom! Remember to check out our Facebook page and stop by next week for another weekly plant update.
Here is a little info about one of the plants that has been used extensively in this year's restoration site.
