Forest Research Expo

How do you value nature?

This is the core question for one class of first year students at UW Bothell, and they have taken to North Creek Forest to look for answers.
The class has visited twice to learn about and explore the forest (including a memorable encounter with a banana slug). Work teams are returning this month to collect data. Small groups are measuring soil and air temperature, species richness, carbon sequestration, and water quality at forest plots on the restoration sites, in the forest interior, and in edge areas that have not yet been restored. They will create infographics to help interpret their findings for the public.

On November 19 at our Forest Research Expo you can see their infographics and participate in hands-on demonstrations of the equipment and techniques they used. We hope to see you there!

Forest Research Ramping Up

11/9/2015

Over the past 6 months we have been ramping up our research program - formalizing a Research Committee, outlining projects, and investing in hardware and software that will enable us to collect, analyze and share data we collect in North Creek Forest. We also continue to partner with UW-Bothell and Cascadia College professors interested in using the Forest as an outdoor laboratory. Many of our UW-REN graduates are now helping out in various capacities in our research program, including Carolyn Stapp (UW-REN Capstone class of 2013-2014), who is serving as our Research Program intern. Carolyn is organizing data, coordinating the Research Committee, recruiting data collection volunteers, as well as serving on the Stewardship side of things as a Site Steward for her UW-REN project (Site 3). Thank you Carolyn - we appreciate your experience and perspective and all of your hard work!

Fall Research Internships

10/16/2015

Our Research Committee is conducting a forest survey and is looking for interns to help with three projects: assessing and mapping the density and abundance of invasive species, assessing and mapping plant communities, and mapping the physical features of the forest.

For each project, interns will survey the forest and its borders using a GPS unit, take data points, and write descriptive field notes. These studies will help inform our future research and stewardship goals and will help inform the Master Plan that will direct the future of the Forest. We are recruiting volunteer interns this fall to help!

If you have taken at least one GIS class and want to gain more experience while you explore the interior of North Creek Forest, take a look at the internship descriptions linked below!
