With the final purchase under contract, the City of Bothell is wasting no time and we are thrilled to announce that the master plan for North Creek Forest will start in early 2017! The City has posted the RFQ for a landscape architect to facilitate this exciting project. A park master plan includes a visioning process and opportunities for the community to have input on how the forest will be used. The landscape architect will synthesize scientific infomation, land use restrictions (determined by the grants that funded the purchase which provide important conservation protections), and community needs to develop a big picture plan for North Creek Forest. This plan will guide the development of a trail system and other features. Friends of North Creek Forest is looking forward to being involved with the planning, helping with community engagement, and supporting the execution of the plan once it's complete. Our nearby college partners (UW Bothell and Cascadia College) both prioritize community based learning and research and we have been fortunate to sponsor many student and volunteer research projects over the past five years. Water quality, hydrology and botanical analyses, as well as maps of the plant community, surface water, and invasive species, created by students and volunteers will help inform this plan. Thank you to all the students, professors and volunteers who have collected data - your work will be used to help inform the upcoming master plan! Your support - of time, talent, or donations that help fund these projects, gives the landscape architects a leg up on the master plan and helps leverage the city's resources. This partnership, between city, nonprofit, higher ed institutions, and the community at large is an example of how different entities can work together to create a whole that is greater than the sum of its parts. It is clear that 2017 is going to be an exciting year for North Creek Forest!
